Home Care During Dental Emergencies

Though it’s crucial to make sure you get professional treatment as fast as possible, there are a few things you can do at home to ease the pain while you wait. Here are a few tactics worth trying depending on the emergency at hand:

Cracked, Broken, or Lost Tooth
Save the tooth or its fragments. If the tooth has been knocked out, be careful to touch the crown only, never the root. For a lost tooth, the American Academy of Endodontists recommends trying to put the tooth back in its socket if possible.

Rinse out your mouth with water, and apply pressure to any areas with bleeding. Use an ice pack to help with any swelling.

Tooth or Jaw Pain
Infection or an abscessed tooth are the most likely causes of your pain.

For an abscess, try rinsing with mild saltwater to ease your pain. In either case, put an ice pack against the outside of your cheek to keep down any swelling until you’ve had a chance to see your dentist. Take an over-the-counter pain reliever if needed.

Lost Filling or Crown
If you can, save the crown or filling. Until you can see your dentist, you may be able to place your crown back over your tooth by coating the bottom of it with a bit of toothpaste. Try to eat softer foods, and take care when biting or chewing.

Broken Braces or Wires
To bend a broken wire away from the soft tissues of your mouth, use the eraser of a pencil. You can cover any sharp edges with orthodontic wax or a bit of gauze until you can see your dentist.
